Position Purpose:
The surgical scrub technician under the supervision of the registered nurse assists the preoperative team in the care and safety of patients undergoing surgical intervention. Performs direct and indirect care activities according to the behaviors and responsibilities as outlined in this statement.
Key Job Activities:
- Assists in the draping procedure.
- Assists personnel with surgical attire.
- Assists with instrumentation throughout procedure.
- Performs sharps, instrument and sponge count according to standard.
- Coordinates with circulating RN as a member of the Perioperative Team.
- Ensures all personnel maintain aseptic technique and universal precautions at all times.
- Prepares operating rooms for procedures.
- Stocks operation room and delivery rooms in accordance with the par levels.
- Cleans and replaces equipment between patients.
- Cleans surgical trays after each use. Processes for Supply, Processing and Distribution department delivery. Completes instrumentation tabulation form.
- Stocks overhead warmers according to par levels. Maintains oxygen and suction equipment on warmers. Changes oxygen tanks as required.
- Cleans inside of cabinets in operating, delivery and supply rooms.
- Maintains inventory of special instruments. Monitors expiration dates and assures expired instruments are returned for processing.
- Monitors par levels of instrument packs and assures availability on unit. Stock supply when necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience:
- Associate's degree
- Operating room caregivers must be certified by the national board of surgical technology and surgical assisting (NBSTSA) or obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
- Labor & Delivery caregivers must be certified by national board of surgical technology and surgical assisting (NBSTSA) or the national center for competency testing (NCCt).

Registry (per diem) Caregivers are caregivers who work less than 1,000 hours in a calendar year.Registry caregivers are employees of Sinai Health System but are typically on an as needed basis. These caregivers may be called upon to cover full-time or part-time caregivers during PTO events or sick leave as well as to provide supplemental coverage. Registry Caregivers are not eligible for Sinai’s benefit programs with the exception for Sick-C, PPO Medical Plan, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and non-match eligible contribution to the Sinai Health System Consolidated 403(b) retirement savings plan.
